3 out of 5 stars 3 out of 5 stars!   You get what you pay for 2010-07-03

Despite what the product being called a five port usb card it is a four port card. You cannot use the all four external ports and the internal port at the same time! Most people probably do not need the internal port, but if your like me and did your out of luck with this card. Other than that it is a fine card and installed without problem. Assuming you don't try to use all five ports this card should be fine.

4 out of 5 stars 4 out of 5 stars!   First one a dud, second one's the charm. 2010-07-01

The first one of these I received from Amazon gave me a headache. Windows picked it up, but if I plugged anything into it, it froze the whole computer. I spent 2 days trying to update drivers, etc to get it to work. 3 root hubs and 2 host controllers were showing up in device manager, where it said everything was working properly. But it really wasn't. In the end, I decided on a return. The second one arrived, I popped it in, and it works a treat with no further involvement from me. So my advice is, if you get this and it does not boot the first time working pefectly-- it's probably a dud. Don't waste your time, just do an exchange. Amazon rocks-- shipping out replacements right away. I noted that in device manager with the one working properly, I see 4 Universal Host Controllers, and 4 USB Root Hubs added. If you don't see that, then just assume there is a short somewhere and don't waste your time with drivers, etc.

4 out of 5 stars 4 out of 5 stars!   Issues getting it to play nice with older PCs 2010-06-24

I bought this for an older Gateway system running Win98SE with three on-board USB 1.1 ports to add USB 2.0 for faster access to a 500gb external HD and flash drives. The computer only had one PCI slot unused, so I started by just using that one. Unfortunately, the BIOS does not allow you to configure what IRQs are used for each device, and this card uses three IRQs. (one each for the two Universal Host Controllers and one for the Enhanced Host Controller) The BIOS assigned three based on which slot it was placed in and Windows proceeded to boot up. Unfortunately, one of the three was being shared with the AGP video card, (and another was shared with a HD controller card) and during boot Win98 locked. I proceeded to pull PCI cards and played musical peripherals for about an hour before I found a card slot combination that would not share IRQs with either the video card or the HD controller card. (it ended up sharing IRQs with the SB Live! card, the USB 1.1 ports which the BIOS won't let me disable, and the Ethernet card) Once I found the best combo, Win98 recognized the card and let me install drivers. Unfortunately, the disk contains a large number of drivers, not just those for this card and it took me a while before I found the correct ones. Once all that was done, the card worked flawlessly and recognized the 4-port 3.5 bay hub that was connected to the internal USB slot. In summary, the card works as advertised, but people with older PCs should be aware of the issues and limitations of this card. Shipping was fast and the price was unbeatable.

5 out of 5 stars 5 out of 5 stars!   Much cheaper than a new computer! 2010-05-28

I purchased this for my Grandma's computer (a Dell Dimension desktop) because her new mp3 player wasn't working very well with the older USB 1 ports. She was planning on getting a new computer, but I convinced her to try this and some extra ram first, and it works great! Very easy to (physically) install, and XP did the rest- no drivers to download, no software to run- simple! The hardest part turned out to be getting her computer opened up (thanks to Dell having the wrong instructions posted... oh well)! Don't be fooled by the higher-priced alternatives; this product is great!

1 out of 5 stars 1 out of 5 stars!   NOT internal USB 2010-05-18

This card does not have INTERNAL USB. Internal USB is a 6-pin connector. What this card DOES have is an external USB 2.0 that can be connected to internally.

The description does not SPECIFY this, and there are no good photos to show what it has internally.

I cannot say how this card performs as I did not install it after seeing this.

I have XP Pro SP3, I plugged it in, booted up, and it was detected and installed automatically. It worked for transferring images from my digital camera to my computer. This is just an initial review, as that's all I've done, but as my title states, this USB card was cheap, quick, and easy to get going.

Amazon Free Super Saving shipping is a bonus!
